Students asked to share thoughts on TDs' Dáil behaviour

The Leas-Cheann Comhairle has asked a group of students to write to Dáil Éireann and share their thoughts on how some politicians behave in the House.

Carlow-Kilkenny TD John McGuinness made the remarks following a heated row between Tánaiste Simon Harris and Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty during Leaders' Questions.

Mr Harris and Mr Doherty clashed over new rental laws that come into force on Sunday.

Mr McGuinness repeatedly rang his bell and demanded order during Mr Harris's and Mr Doherty's interaction.

"Can you please respect the Chair? I'll say it again, most exchanges are fine, but the carry on here on Thursday morning is nothing short of shameful in a way," Mr McGuinness told the House.

Later, Mr McGuinness said he wanted to acknowledge a group of students sitting in the public gallery of the Dáil during proceedings.

He said: "I want to give you a bit of homework. You might write into the Ceann Comhairle and let us know what you thought of this morning's behaviour.

"I'd love to hear from you because my 12-year-old grandchild tells me that if her class behaved the way some behave in this House, they'd be sent to the principal's office.

"Now, I don't know what the equivalent to that would be in Dáil Éireann but certainly, I could pick out a few from this morning, and most other Thursday mornings, that I would love to send to the principal's office."
