The Raise the Roof coalition has urged the Government to end what it says is a "tsunami" of evictions.

The group brings together trade unions, political parties and civil society organisations.

Speaking outside Leinster House, SIPTU organiser Paddy Cole said it is estimated that 20,000 tenants were evicted last year.

"People are being left to the frailties of the market and we need to try and turn it around."

He said the new rent legislation was a "wrong-headed" policy which should be turned around.

The group is calling for a permanent ban on "no-fault" evictions and has also demanded the Government defend the limited protections of Rent Pressure Zones (RPZs), which it says will be undermined by the proposals in the new Bill.
