Labour Party members in Galway West have selected Councillor Helen Ogbu to contest the forthcoming by-election in the constituency.

She previously contested the 2024 General Election, having been first elected to Galway City Council earlier that year.

Cllr Ogbu was the sole candidate seeking the Labour nomination.

Labour leader Ivana Bacik said the by-election was a chance to send a message to the Government that "real change is needed".

The by-election, to fill the seat vacated by Catherine Connolly after she became President, is expected to take place in April or May.

So far, a number of candidates have declared, including Noel Thomas, of Independent Ireland; Niall Murphy (Green Party) and independents Thomas Welby and Sheila Garrity.

Discussions are continuing among members of Fianna Fáil, Sinn Féin and Fine Gael about their candidate selection.

A number of other parties and individuals are also expected to contest the poll.
