There has been a sharp drop in support for Fianna Fáil, a new opinion poll suggests.

The Business Post/Red C poll suggests that support for the party has dropped three percentage points to 15% since the previous poll in November.

Sinn Féin is up two percentage points to 24%, while support for Fine Gael is at 18%, up one percentage point.

The poll puts independents at 13%, down one percentage point, while support for the Social Democrats is up two points to 10%.

The Labour party is up one percentage point to 5% in the same poll while support for Aontú has fallen by one point to 5%.

Support for Independent Ireland is unchanged on 4%.

People Before Profit remains on 3% while the Green Party is down two percentage points to 1%.

The poll was conducted between 16 and 21 January.

The margin of error is plus or minus 3%.

Reacting to the opinion poll, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said there have been hundreds of polls over the last few years that have borne no relation to the election count.

"My focus is on the people. My focus is on the issues that matter to the Irish people, housing, in terms of investment in infrastructure, improving the lives of people with a disability, and also in terms of the broader public services that we are investing in," he said.
