Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said he is "in favour" of banning sunbeds, calling the move a "no-brainer".

His comments follow a HSE report earlier this week which concluded the number of skin cancer cases diagnosed in Ireland is "rising rapidly".

The HSE said there are "lessons to be learnt" from Australia, where a ban on commercial sunbeds has been in place since 2016.

Ireland has previously banned sunbed use for under 18s.

Speaking about implementing a total ban, the Taoiseach said: "It's something I would be advocating for."

Mr Martin said he is of "a view it is a no-brainer", adding that "anything that's a no-brainer we should do in terms of prevention".

"The survival rate for quite a number of cancers has improved significantly ... and preventative measures in public health have been a significant factor," he said.

He added: "I would hope we would bring in legislation."

The HSE says skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in Ireland, with more than 11,000 cases diagnosed every year
