Seventy-four garda stations are affected by asbestos, according to a review carried out by the Office of Public Works (OPW) nine years ago, the Dáil has heard.

Labour TD Alan Kelly said the report, compiled in conjunction with the State Claims Agency, found that 12 stations required urgent repairs.

They were: Mountjoy, Kevin Street, Naas and Santry, where some works have take place, as well as Bandon, Kilmainham, Ashbourne, Newcastle West, Baltinglass, Tramore, Blackrock and Blessington.

Although the review was marked with the words "necessary attention", Mr Kelly claimed that "it went into the abyss".

He asked Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan: "Where does that leave us as regards any gardaí who have been sick in the intervening years, who have had respiratory issues or possibly had issues in relation to cancer?"

Mr O'Callaghan said that he would be extremely concerned if gardaí were not working in a safe environment and he would go back and look at the 2016 OPW report.

"Obviously, the concern is an individual within An Garda Síochána getting ill as a result of the presence of asbestos.

"Fortunately, that has not been brought to my attention as of yet and, hopefully, that is not the case," the minister said.

He added that if any member of the force sustained an injury, which was caused as a result of the known presence of asbestos in a building, there would be a liability on the part of the State.
