The Standards in Public Office Commission (SIPO) is to carry out an investigation into Independent Ireland TD Ken O'Flynn following a complaint about comments he made when he was a Cork City councillor.

The comments are alleged to contravene the Local Government Act 2001 and the Code of Conduct for Councillors.

The Commission intends to hear to hear a preliminary application by Mr O'Flynn's legal team next Monday.

This move by SIPO was triggered by a complaint following a contribution from Mr O'Flynn on local radio in Cork during a discussion on the Spring Lane halting site at Ballyvolane in Co Cork.

The TD, who was elected in Cork North-Central at the last general election, said that his legal defence has been well prepared.
