Roderic O'Gorman has been re-elected as leader of the Green Party.

The former minister for children, who became leader of the party last summer, confirmed earlier this month that he was putting himself forward for re-election.

At the time he acknowledged the party's poor performance in last year's General Election, which saw it lose 11 of its 12 seats.

Mr O'Gorman is the party's only TD following that election result.

In a statement this afternoon, Mr O'Gorman said despite the difficult election, the party continues to be "a strong voice for climate action, for supporting families and for equality".

He said he was committed to rebuilding the party and to listen and learn why the party lost votes to "understand how we can build back support across all parts of our country."

Councillor Janet Horner was elected as the party's new Cathaoirleach.

In a statement, the Green Party said both candidates reached the required number of nominations to contest their respective positions and as no other candidates reached the thresholds during the nomination period, a vote of the wider membership was not required.
