Legal costs awarded to witnesses at the 'Grace' inquiry have so far amounted to €2.5 million out of the total cost of €13.6m.

On Tuesday, the long-awaited report into the Grace foster home abuse case in the southeast of the country was published.

New figures released to RTÉ News by the Department of Children show that the Farrelly Commission has agreed costs of €2.5m to some of its witnesses who gave evidence over the past eight years.

These include costs awarded to the legal team for Grace who was represented as a ward of court.

Further legal costs have yet to be decided.

€11.1m have been spent on administrative costs for the inquiry.

This includes salaries for the Commission chair Marjorie Farrelly and others on the legal team as well as accommodation costs and documentary counsel services.

It is understood that Ms Farrelly was paid an annual rate of €172,000.

This was based on the annual salary of a High Court Judge at the 2017 rate when the inquiry began.

The Department of Children has also confirmed that the Commission of Investigation has been given an eight-week extension until 23 May.

This is to facilitate further decisions on legal costs as well as archiving of material.
