Sinn Féin has accused the Government of reneging on its pledge to allow members of the Irish diaspora vote in presidential elections.

A Sinn Féin spokesperson said that former taoiseach Enda Kenny promised presidential voting rights to Irish Americans during his 2016 St Patrick's Day visit to the United States but no progress has been made on that commitment.

The party's US-based support group, Friends of Sinn Féin, has placed advertisements in several US publications claiming that Irish unity has also been dropped from the Programme for Government.

The advertisement, which will run in the New York Times, urges Irish America to let visiting Government ministers know that they have an obligation to plan for the unity referendums promised in the Good Friday Agreement.
