The Independent Senator Eileen Flynn is to stand for the position of Leas Cathaoirleach of the Seanad, which will be decided by a vote tomorrow.
The only candidate up to this point was the Fine Gael Senator Maria Byrne, a follow-on from the Fianna Fáil Senator Mark Daly being voted-in as Cathaoirleach last week.
Senator Flynn became the first member of the Traveller community to serve in the Houses of the Oireachtas, after being nominated by Micheál Martin in 2020.
She was elected to the Seanad this year.
Her nomination as Leas Cathaoirleach is being proposed by the Independent Senator Frances Black and seconded by the Labour Senator Nessa Cosgrove.
Maria Byrne first made it to the Seanad in 2016, failed to be re-elected in 2020 but won a by-election seat the following year.
From Limerick, Senator Byrne served as mayor between 2010 and 2011.
