The Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald said her new frontbench is a blend of experience which will "call out every dodgy decision" which the new Government makes.

Speaking in Dublin, she said her frontbench has a gender and regional balance, unlike the new Coalition, which will put forward plans and solutions to the many problems faced by citizens.

Sinn Féin announced its new frontbench this morning, although Pearse Doherty, David Cullinane and Eoin Ó Broin have retained their positions.

Mairéad Farrell has returned to the position she previously held at Public Expenditure, Infrastructure and Reform.

Matt Carthy moves to Justice and Home Affairs while Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire moves to Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade.

Louise O'Reilly has the Social Protection brief while Claire Kerrane goes to Children and Disability.

Darren O'Rourke is in Education, Pa Daly goes to Climate and Environment while Rose Conway Walsh goes to Enterprise.

Martin Kenny goes to Agriculture; Aengus Ó Snodaigh covers Gaeilge and the Gaeltacht; while Pádraig Mac Lochlainn remains Chief Whip.

New to the frontbench are Donna McGettigan in Further and Higher Education and Joanna Byrne in Arts and Media.

Asked about retaining Mr Doherty, Mr Cullinane and Mr Ó Broin in their portfolios, Ms McDonald said they had huge experience and many people were convinced Sinn Féin's policy on health and housing was right.

On the continuing row of Independent deputies supporting the Government seeking Opposition speaking time, she said Tipperary TD Michael Lowry will not be able to mascarade as an Opposition TD.

She said it would be a patent absurdity to allow Deputy Lowry to question Ministers on Opposition time, and any attempt to do that would be resisted strenuously as the public just would not buy it.
