Fine Gael members have voted to ratify the draft Programme for Government that will underpin a coalition with Fianna Fáil and a group of Independents.

The Parliamentary Party voted on the 160-page Programme for Government document earlier and ballots were counted this afternoon.

The count showed 93.9% voted in favour of the Programme for Government while 6.1% voted against.

The plan aims to keep the government in place for five years. It says that the coalition has "come together in partnership to form a stable majority to deliver an ambitious programme and five budgets".

Party leader, Wicklow TD and outgoing Taoiseach, Simon Harris, welcomed the decision of the members.

"Fine Gael has been engaging with members across the country over recent days outlining our commitment to deliver on the issues that matter to people.

"We will enter this government with an absolute determination to deliver support for small businesses, more homes and homeownership, and a radically different approach to disability services.

"We will always back farmers and rural Ireland. The Fine Gael team will now deliver that agenda in Government."

Fine Gael is on course to have seven senior cabinet ministers at the table when the new government holds its first meeting at Áras an Uachtaráin on Wednesday.

A number of promotions are likely, with Jennifer Carroll MacNeill and Martin Heydon set to be elevated to cabinet.

There is also a possibility Fine Gael deputy leader Helen McEntee could be appointed Minister for Education.

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin is expected to return as Taoiseach next week, and serve three years in the post before he is replaced by Fine Gael leader Simon Harris.
