Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has said her party is the only option for voters who want a government without Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael.

She said the electorate will have a "fairly straight forward choice" - more of the same with Fine Gael or Fianna Fáil or, for the first time, a government led by Sinn Féin.

The Dublin Central TD said this was a historic choice for voters, "the opportunity for a change from the way it has always been with Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael in power ... Tweedledum or Tweedledee".

Ms McDonald was speaking at the launch of her Dublin Central constituency campaign, along with fellow candidate Cllr Janice Boylan.

She said her objective was for Sinn Féin to win two seats in Dublin Central, and change the government nationally.

She said her party would run 70 candidates, or more, adding Sinn Féin was "in this, to win it".

The Sinn Féin leader predicted that housing would dominate the election campaign, adding she had no confidence that the parties in the current Coalition could turn the crisis around.

She warned that if the country continues to do what it has been doing on housing " ... there will be economic and social consequences that are profound and far reaching".

Ms McDonald said there was "real frustration" among working people that the Government is "heavy on rhetoric but light on delivery".

She added Sinn Féin wanted "to turn that around and provide a new sense of hope".
