People Before Profit says a State construction firm would absord the Land Development Agency

People Before Profit has called for a State construction company to be paid for from the Apple tax windfall.

The party says some of the Apple funds should be used to set up a state construction company dedicated to building social and affordable homes.

It says this company would absorb the existing Land Development Agency, take a more aggressive stance on the use of CPOs to acquire building land, and ultimately deliver new homes for far less than currently is the case.

Party leader Richard Boyd Barret says they would more than double what the Government currently invests in social and affordable housing and increase the number of homes being built substantially from the Government's target of 15,000.

"We want to increase that to 35,000. That would require €3 billion extra a year and that can be paid for though the Apple tax money. So, a 5 year programme, €3 billion (per year), we use the Apple tax money in order to finance this company."
