Cathaoirleach of the Seanad Jerry Buttimer has been selected by the Fine Gael executive council to stand for the party in the Cork South-Central constituency.

Former minister and long-time local TD Simon Coveney had previously announced he would not contest the next General Election.

A convention in the constituency last July selected councillors Shane O'Callaghan and Úna McCarthy to stand, but now Senator Buttimer has been added to the ticket.

Prior to being a senator, he had been a TD for Cork South-Central between 2011 and 2016.

However, he lost his seat after his Bishopstown base was moved into the neighbouring constituency of Cork North-Central in a 2012 review.

It has since returned to the Cork South-Central constituency.

Prior to becoming a TD, Mr Buttimer served as a Senator between 2007 and 2011.

He had also been a member of Cork City Council between 2004 and 2007.

Senator Buttimer is the founder of the Fine Gael LGBT group.
