The Ceann Comhairle has strongly criticised the spending of €336,000 on the Leinster House bike shelter.

In his opening remarks on the resumption of the Dáil, Seán Ó Feargháil said nobody can understand why the bike shed cost so much.

He described it as a profound embarrassment adding that the public are justifiably angry.

The Ceann Comhairle has asked the OPW Chairman to attend the next meeting of the Oireachtas Commission to answer questions about the cost.

Mr Ó Fearghaíl wants to know why the value for money test was not applied when the huge cost of the shed became clear.

He said the final figure is galling for people struggling to pay their bills and he vowed that there would never be a repeat of such an unwarranted spending of taxpayers' money.

'Denied access'

Meanwhile, Independent TD Danny Healy Rae said that he was "denied access" to the Dáil despite presenting his ID.

"It don't seem right to me. We are elected to come in."

Mr Ó Fearghaíl said that "there were security measures in place because of threatened protests outside".

"We did not want to see happening today. what happened on our return last September."
