Fianna Fáil MEP Barry Andrews has been elected Chair of the European Parliament Development Committee.
It is the first time since 1987 that an Irish MEP has chaired a standing committee in the European Parliament.
On X, the Dublin MEP said it was a huge honour.
"Throughout my career, I have been a steadfast advocate for sustainable development, human rights, and economic growth. These values are at the core of my legislative work and public advocacy. I am passionate about addressing global inequalities and ensuring that development efforts are inclusive and sustainable. At a time of such global insecurity, I feel that our commitment to eradicating poverty, helping those in dire need and improving our relations with developing countries is more important than ever."
Fine Gael Dublin MEP Regina Doherty has been elected as Vice Chair of the Subcommittee on Tax Matters.
Meanwhile, Billy Kelleher was this week appointed as a full member of the Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) and Taxation (FISC) committees and as a member of the European Parliament Delegation with the United States of America. (D-US).
The Fianna Fáil MEP for Ireland South was earlier appointed as First Vice Chair of the Renew Group in the European Parliament.
He said: "Within the Renew Europe group where the Irish delegation is one of the largest, my work as 1st Vice President, effectively Deputy Leader, will ensure that our priorities are respected and included in our group's actions.
"However, the real work, in terms of delivering for citizens, takes place in the committees of the parliament. It is here where we amend legislation that will affect people’s lives for years to come
"Along with my Fianna Fáil colleagues who will sit on other committees, I will be focused on delivering on the manifesto commitments we made when we went before the Irish people.
"For me, I want to see an Insurance Single Market to lower costs for people and businesses, I want to see Public Health Union to ensure all citizens get the best possible health care, and I will fight for a distinct funding mechanism for biodiversity and sustainability that is separate to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP)."
