Labour's 'number one priority' is housing - Bacik

Labour leader Ivana Bacik has said her party wants to re-introduce the no-fault eviction ban and develop a new State construction company in order to address a housing crisis that she said is the "civil rights issue of our generation".

Deputy Bacik outlined the "red line" issues in her keynote speech at Labour's annual conference on this evening.

In a speech at the Helix centre at Dublin City University which also prioritised migration and climate action, the Labour leader said housing is her party's "number one priority" and said her party wants to build one million homes over the next decade.

Deputy Bacik said if Labour returns to Government, it will re-introduce a no-fault eviction ban, regulate short-term lets and turn the Land Development Agency into a State construction company.

The Labour leader described the housing crisis as the "civil rights issue of our generation," and said politicians must stand up for Ireland's 4,000 homeless children, young adults unable to move out of family homes and people stuck in "a rental trap".

Deputy Bacik also said Labour will always show solidarity with people living in tents on Mount Street, Ukrainians fleeing Russia's war in their country and to people in Gaza.

She said her own family sought refuge in Ireland 80 years ago, and that Labour and other parties must show a united front against far-right views in Ireland.

The Labour leader also used her keynote annual conference speech to highlight a number of climate action plans, saying she wants to reduce average electricity prices by €700 a year and make public transport more affordable.

Deputy Bacik said if Labour enters Government it will establish a new government department focused on examining the potential for a united Ireland and exactly what it would involve.

The Labour leader also took aim at the Government, saying ministers are "out of touch".

She said if Fine Gael's likely new leader Simon Harris has confidence in his policies, he should call a general election now.
