Watch: David Norris delivers final Seanad speech

Independent Senator David Norris has delivered his final speech in Seanad Éireann, after which he officially resigned and ended 36 years' membership of the upper house.

In his speech, he said: "What is happening to the people of Gaza is appalling and cannot be allowed to continue. Man's inhumanity to man is our greatest shame."

Criticising Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Mr Norris contended that he was leading his people towards "death" rather than the Jewish ethic of "to life."

He said: "To death, in overwhelming numbers, for the unfortunate trapped citizens of Gaza. I deplore it completely."

Mr Norris urged the Seanad "to continue to push for peace, in our times".

Speaking in the Seanad chamber, Cathaoirleach of the Seanad and Fine Gael Senator Jerry Buttimer told Mr Norris "your passion hasn't diminished as we could see from that final contribution".

Independent Senator Michael McDowell said Mr Norris "championed causes" throughout his career, while Sinn Féin Senator Fintan Warfield said he was key to fighting for equal rights for gay people in Ireland.

In a formal letter, President Michael D Higgins said Senator Norris' career has been "a journey of unwavering dedication to public service".

In another letter, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said he spoke for many people, saying: "We stand on your shoulders, in your campaigns you show true leadership".

Mr Norris announced his retirement in November.

He told the Trinity News that he intends to move to Cyprus to enjoy some sunshine.

Mr Norris said it was time to pass the "baton to the next generation".

He had been a member of Seanad Éireann since 1987.#
