The European Parliament has said that an incident involving "suspicious water contamination" in its building in Strasbourg today was an isolated incident.

The Parliament's press service said that there were concerns in relation to one bottle of water.

It also said that two people who had been suffering from light symptoms have returned to work.

As a precaution, this afternoon it issued an alert to MEPs and staff over suspected water contamination, warning them not to drink from any water bottles handed out in the building.

It is understood the contamination concern was around water bottles distributed in the Hemicycle (debating chamber) in the parliament building in Strasbourg.

Authorities in France were informed of the incident and relevant checks were carried out.

MEPs are in the French city this week for the parliament's last plenary session of the year.
