The portrait of former Taoiseach Brian Cowen has gone on display in Leinster House more than 12 years after he left office.

The painting, which was on display in the Royal Hibernian Academy early this year, is hanging on the landing close to the doors of the Dáil chamber.

It is positioned beside the portrait of Bertie Ahern and is facing a portrait of John A Costello, who served two terms as Taoiseach.

Mr Cowen became Ireland's 12th Taoiseach after he succeeded Bertie Ahern in May 2008.

He was in office for nearly three years until March 2011, during which time the country was plunged into a deep economic crisis.

The €12,000 portrait commission for the Department of the Taoiseach was managed by the Office of Public Works.

The portrait was painted by Blaise Smith, who lives in Co Kilkenny.

He is an award-winning member of the RHA and has been described as one of Ireland's leading figurative painters.
