Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín has accused the Government of being far too reliant on foreign direct investment which is mobile rather than focussing on building indigenous enterprise.

Asked about the drop in corporation tax revenue, Mr Tóibín said overdependence on these receipts amounted to a weakness in Government policy.

However, he added that there is still a significant surplus to be dispersed in this year's Budget.

But he said the Coalition must be honest about the costs of investing properly in public services.

"The big trick pulled by Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael is to say that we can have European-level public services on American taxation. We can't, we need to invest properly and reform".

Mr Tóibín was speaking at Aontú's Ard Fheis today in Dublin.

The party is also calling for a new regional city to be developed and grown to an international size to draw down international investment and rebalance development.

It also says 25,000 public houses should be built annually and for vacant private and local authority houses to be redeveloped.

Up to 400 Aontú delegates are attending the Ard Fheis.

A number of guest speakers are addressing the gathering, including Pat McCormack, President of the ICMSA, Aubrey McCarthy of Tiglin, Roger Cole of the Peace and Neutrality Alliance, Majella Beattie of Care Champions, JP O'Sullivan of Mecpaths and Pat Conway from Relatives for Justice.
