Fine Gael TD David Stanton has confirmed that he will not run in the next general election.

The Cork East TD is the fifth Fine Gael deputy to announce they will not seek re-election.

In a statement, Mr Stanton said he informed his local colleagues last night at the Fine Gael Cork East AGM that he would stand down at the next election.

Four other FG TDs have also said they will not run again - John Paul Phelan, Michael Creed, Brendan Griffin and Joe McHugh.

In his statement, Mr Stanton said that it was the "utmost privilege" to represent the Cork East constituents since his first election in 1997.

Taoiseach and Fine Gael leader Leo Varadkar paid tribute to Mr Stanton, saying that he served his constituency diligently.
