Leaders of political parties will not have an opportunity to speak during the joint sitting of the Dáil and the Seanad which will be addressed by US President Joe Biden next Thursday.

It is understood the session will begin with an introduction by Ceann Comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl.

It will be followed by an address by President Biden.

Cathaoirleach of the Seanad Jerry Buttimer will be the final speaker.

The format will be different to recent addresses to the joint sitting of the Dáil and Seanad by President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola.

In both cases leaders of all political parties, representatives of groups of independents and some representatives of the Seanad had an opportunity to speak.

It is understood the protocol for addresses by presidents of countries is different and party leaders, including Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, do not get an opportunity to speak at such joint sittings.

Joe Biden will be the fourth president of the US to address the Dáil and Seanad after Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan and John F Kennedy.
