Taoiseach pledges continued support in phone call with Zelensky

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar held a phone call this afternoon with the President of Ukraine.

In the 30 minute call, Volodymyr Zelensky thanked Ireland for its ongoing support of his country.

Mr Varadkar pledged continued support and solidarity to Ukraine.

He said Ireland was backing Ukraine's application for EU membership, and was examining how additional help could be provided to help Ukraine rebuild its civilian and energy infrastructure.

During the call, Mr Zelensky extended an invitation to Mr Varadkar to visit his country.

It is understood Mr Varadkar said he's "keen" to travel there "this year".

Tánaiste Micheál Martin visited Kyiv last July, when he was serving as taoiseach.

Mr Varadkar also briefed Mr Zelensky about the many discussions he held regarding Russian’s invasion of Ukraine, during his visit to the US last week.

Mr Zelensky extended his wishes for a happy St Patrick’s Day to Ireland, and wished peace and good luck to Ireland and Irish people.
