Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said the Irish Government has not ruled out taking legal action against the British Government if it proceeds with the controversial Troubles Legacy Bill.

He said he will discuss the issue with US President Joe Biden next week when they meet in the White House and he said Congress had also taken an interest in what is happening.

Mr Varadkar told the Oireachtas Finance Committee that he wants to persuade the British Government not to go ahead, but he added that a court challenge is a possibility.

"Taking your nearest neighbour to court is not a small thing to do and it could sour relations between our Government and the Government in Westminster and we don't want to go down that road at the moment, but we're not ruling it out."

He said he would meet British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and ask him to listen to victims groups and the five parties in Northern Ireland who oppose the Bill.
