Government Chief Whip Hildegarde Naughton has admitted that she "tried cannabis in her 20s", but said the drug was not "for her".

The TD, who is also a Minister of State at the Department of Health, was speaking after the Citizens' Assembly on drugs was formally established by the Dáil yesterday.

The 45-year-old TD confirmed that she has not taken the illegal drug since her 20s.

Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise Neale Richmond said he too smoked cannabis when he was younger, but he did this in the Netherlands.

Minister for Justice Simon Harris said this morning that the use of drugs in recreation settings is far too prevalent.

Mr Harris said people should be aware of its links to gangland crime and the depravation it has caused in some communities.

He said he was not aware of illegal drug taking in Leinster House, but if anyone has any information they should tell gardaí.
