The Green Party wants to establish a Commission for Future Generations.
Waterford TD Marc Ó Cathasaigh introduced the Commission of Future Generations bill in the Dáil chamber this afternoon.
If passed, the bill would also allow for the establishment of an Ombudsman for Future Generations which would act as a "guardian for the interests of futures generations".
Within the Commission's first year, it would prepare a report on the potential role of a Joint Oireachtas Committee on Future Generations and would seek to measure progress in terms of the well-being of society.
Addressing the Dáíl this afternoon, Deputy Ó Cathasaigh said that future generations "must count" but that the current political system and electoral cycle "fails to capture that".
The Commission proposal is based on a similar idea in Wales where a Future Generations Commissioner was also established.
