Talks under way on extra security measures for elected representatives

Talks are under way between the Department of Public Expenditure and the Houses of the Oireachtas on funding any additional security measures that may be required for elected representatives.

Earlier this week, the Clerk of the Dáil circulated a crime prevention information sheet to all TD's urging them to be streetwise to ensure their personal security.

The move follows a security incident last week involving Minister of State Anne Rabbitte and Fine Gael TD Ciaran Cannon when a bag of excrement was thrown at them during at a public meeting in Galway.

It comes as a survey of 50 TDs by RTÉ's Prime Time found that almost half of them have been threatened online in the last 12 months.

The Public Expenditure Minister Paschal Donohoe today said "anything that needs to be done to strengthen the security that is available to Oireachtas members will be made available".

He said that there are discussions under way on "how we can bring forward regulations and how we can bring clarity to these matters".

"But when we talk to the Oireachtas regarding changes that will need to be made, members will need to know how much funding will be available, under what circumstances, and how this will be done."

He added that while these things can take a bit of time it needs to be done "really quickly given how important this issue is".

The advice issued on Monday following consultation with gardaí urged elected members of the Oireachtas to avoid holding constituency clinics alone in empty buildings.

It suggested that planned visits to the homes of constituents could instead take place in public places.

TDs were also asked to consider having a personal alarm and to wear comfortable shoes so they can move quickly if they need to.
