The Cabinet has given approval to publish a bill that seeks to strengthen the Government's ability to manage fuel stocks in the event of an oil shortage.

The Oil Emergency Contingency and Transfer of Renewable Transport Fuels Functions Bill seeks to strengthen Government's ability to manage oil stocks in the event of a curtailment of supply.

However, the Department does not see this as a risk or concern at present.

Ireland's National Oil Reserves Agency (NORA) holds approximately 85 days of strategic stocks, and this is expected to rise to a 90-day supply by the end of January.

The bill was brought to Cabinet by Minister for the Environment Eamon Ryan.
