Carroll MacNeill and O'Donnell promoted to junior ministers

The Cabinet has approved the appointment of junior ministers following a reshuffle of some positions.

Two Fine Gael TDs, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill and Kieran O'Donnell, have been promoted from the backbenches.

The big move of the day was the appointment of Peter Burke to the role of European Affairs Minister.

Community Development Minister Joe O'Brien will now also assist the Department of Integration in overseeing the accommodation of those seeking refuge in Ireland.

Hildegarde Naughton, already appointed to the Department of the Taoiseach as Government Chief Whip, has been assigned additional responsibilities to also be a Minister of State at the Department of Health.

The Government has already appointed Jack Chambers as Minister for International and Road Transport and Logistics at the Department of Transport, as well as Minister for Postal Policy at the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications.

Senator Pippa Hackett was also appointed as Minister for Land Use and BioDiversity at the Department of Agriculture.

This reshuffle of junior ministers has proved to be more substantial than Saturday's rotation of the senior ranks.

Junior ministers mingle on the steps of Government Buildings

Drugs Strategy Minister Frank Feighan and Overseas Aid Minister Colm Brophy have both left office.

Sean Fleming has been appointed Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs to oversee International Development and the Diaspora.

Thomas Byrne becomes Minister for Sport, and Niall Collins retains his position in Higher Education.

Speaking this evening, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said: "Having emerged from Covid, we face major challenges in the years ahead.

"We must treat each challenge as a national emergency and deploy the full resources of the State, the full machinery of Government, to make an immediate and real difference.

"These Ministers of State will play a vital role in that response, and in delivering the remainder of the Programme for Government."

A Cabinet reshuffle took place at the weekend

Kerry Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin today thanked Mr Varadkar for considering him for a role, but said he was unable to accept due to family reasons.

In a statement to RTÉ News, Mr Griffin said: "I wish my friend and colleague, An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, every success in his important work for our country and I thank him for considering me.

"I send my heartiest congratulations to my colleagues who have been appointed to ministerial roles and wish them well in their difficult work. They will all have my full support in their endeavours."

Today's Cabinet deliberations on this issue will take place with all mobile devices left outside the room after Mr Varadkar asked ministers to follow this rule for security reasons.
