Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin has called for a ban on all SUVs in Dublin Bay South, the constituency of Minister for the Environment Eamon Ryan.

Mr Griffin, who is Deputy Government Chief Whip, said he was putting the proposal out there so urban people in the constituency would know what it feels like to be on the receiving end of "hare-brained proposals".

Speaking to Radio Kerry, he also said he was glad to have highlighted the turf proposal.

He said it was very easy to shout from rooftops in urban areas at places 300km away, whether it was turf cutting or a liquefied natural gas terminal in Tarbert, or now removing second cars from people.

He was speaking after the off-record briefing of journalists about the second car proposals which appeared this morning.

He and other TDs were receiving calls from worried constituents with two cars.

"It's hard enough for people at the moment," Mr Griffin said.

Predominantly, it was working people who were going to be affected by this latest "hair-brained" proposal, he said.

He called on "the brave souls" who briefed the journalists about the ban on second cars, to come forward and reveal their identities. He had seen no such proposal.

Mr Griffin also hit out at targeting by Minister Ryan on agriculture, saying food production was never more vital and there was a rocky road ahead for food.

He was "glad" to have highlighted the turf proposal, he said.

"None of us are climate change deniers, absolutely not. But when it comes to these things that are counterproductive, I won't be staying quiet," he added.
