RTÉ Director General Dee Forbes has admitted to an Oireachtas Committee on the Irish Language this afternoon that the national broadcaster had failed to fulfil its lawful commitment to a comprehensive range of programming in Irish.
That commitment enshrined in the 2009 Broadcasting Act was highlighted by the Coimisinéir Teanga four years ago.
Rónán Ó Domhnaill's Office found less than 0.7% of RTÉ's schedule was ''as Gaeilge''.
Today, Ms Forbes made a robust defence of measures taken since the Coimisinéir's investigation. Last year, RTÉ broadcast 700 hours in Irish, about 3% of output.
At today's Committee, other matters raised included the fact that RTÉ receives five times the State funding that is made to TG4.
Pay disparities between Raidió na Gaeltachta staff and their fellows in the wider organisation was debated.
Ms Forbes stated that a full review of all 167 pay-grades in RTÉ would be completed in six months.
A new strategy, a three-year plan, for RTÉ as Gaeilge, is to be furnished to the Coimisinéir Teanga in November.
