Green Party leader Eamon Ryan said he has spoken to party TD Brian Leddin at length over the deputy's derogatory comments about a female Limerick councillor.
Mr Ryan said there was no space for commentary that is demeaning of the other person even in a private messaging group.
A Sunday newspaper reported that Mr Leddin made derogatory remarks about councillor Elisa O'Donovan in a WhatsApp group.
Asked whether there would be sanctions, Mr Ryan said Mr Leddin was talking to the Green Party's executive committee and management committee.
He said it was important that the TD had apologised and that it was the right thing to do.
