Senator Lynn Boylan has been nominated to stand as the Sinn Féin candidate in the Dublin Bay South constituency by the party's Inner City Cumann.

Local Sinn Féin TD Chris Andrews tweeted: "Having worked with Lynn for many years, it is an exciting time ahead."

Senator Boylan replied: "Thanks a million to the cumman and members for the support."

The Sinn Féin selection convention, to decide who will be the party's candidate for the Dublin Bay South constituency, will be held this Friday.

The closing date for nominations of candidates is tomorrow evening.

As it currently stands, Ms Boylan is the only nomination.

Earlier this week, the former MEP said the by-election would be a referendum on the Government's housing policy.

The by-election, which was triggered by the resignation of Fine Gael TD Eoghan Murphy, is expected to take place in early July.

It is thought that consideration is being given to either Wednesday 7 July or Thursday 8 July to hold the poll.

There is a view in Government that a midweek vote would lead to a larger turnout given the time of year when many people begin their holidays at weekends.

However, the writ has not been moved yet in the Dáil to formally set the election campaign in motion.

Several candidates have already been selected including James Geoghegan for Fine Gael, Labour's Ivana Bacik and Deirdre Conroy for Fianna Fáil, People Before Profit's Brigid Purcell, while Independent Mannix Flynn is also running.
