Dublin has lost out to the German city of Bonn as the chosen location for a new office of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).
The Government had hoped its bid for the centre would have resulted in up to 250 new jobs at the Cherrywood campus in Dublin.
The ECMWF headquarters will remain in the UK but the new office in Bonn will focus on European Union-funded activity from next year.
The selection of Bonn followed an international competition involving Ireland and nine other EU member states.
The Irish bid was coordinated by Met Éireann and the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government.
