'I thought no I can't give up yet' - Senator Regina Doherty on losing her seat in the General Election

Leader of the Seanad and former minister for social protection Regina Doherty says she is looking forward to contesting the next General Election in Dublin Fingal.

She speaks about the disappointment around losing her seat in Meath-East in the last election.

She describes being in Government when Covid-19 hit earlier this year as "surreal".

Senator Doherty was speaking to Aisling Kenny for a special edition of RTÉ's Your Politics Podcast to discuss the lack of women in politics, despite the introduction of gender quotas.

She talks about being a mum to four children and the abuse she has received since being elected, including threats to burn down her house.

Senator Doherty also opens up about childhood memories and going to a Fine Gael Ard Fheis in her Communion dress.

She says she misses being busy and is looking forward to the challenge of contesting the election in Dublin Fingal.
