Any changes to GP contract were minor - Varadkar

Sinn Féin's Pearse Doherty has said there were 35 changes in the document provided by Tánaiste Leo Varadkar to the head of the National Association of General Practitioners (NAGP) compared to the final agreed GP contract.

Mr Doherty told the Dáil this proves that talks with the Irish Medical Organisation were ongoing at the time.

He said Mr Varadkar does not sound like he is sorry and he has thrown NAGP President Dr Maitiú Ó Tuathail "under a bus and then reversed over him".

"Maitiu Ó Tuathail is not at fault here," Mr Doherty said.

The Tánaiste said again that he has apologised and any changes made to the document were minor and did not require further Cabinet approval.

He said it was unclear how Mr Doherty could compare the documents given that he himself does not have a copy of it anymore.

Mr Varadkar said he had to check a date with Dr Ó Tuathail last weekend about when he provided him with the document.

The Tánaiste said he had to do this because he does not typically keep all text messages but does retain emails.

Mr Doherty asked too if a second document had been sent with the confidential contract.

In response, Mr Varadkar said he does not recall a second document.
