Several Independent TDs are to stand back from talks on Government formation until the Green Party reaches a decision on whether or not to enter negotiations.

Last week two groups of Independents met a joint Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael negotiating team.

However, the Regional Group has now told those parties that they are waiting for clarity on the Greens' position before committing to any further talks.

It is understood that the Independent Group, which includes TDs Marian Harkin, Michael Fitzmaurice and Michael McNamara, is also going to seek further detail on the Greens' policy plans.

Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael are currently drafting a response to the Green Party's request for answers on 17 areas of future government policy.

"We're considering the issues raised in the Green Party's detailed letter and will respond as soon as possible," a Fine Gael spokesperson said.

Meanwhile the political focus remains on the Covid-19 crisis with the Cabinet set to meet tomorrow and again on Friday.

It is possible that an update on Covid-19 restrictions could be issued after Friday's meeting.

The Minister of State with special responsibility for Disability Issues, Finian McGrath, will brief the Government on the response to Covid-19 in congregated settings tomorrow.
