The Independent Alliance is in crisis with one of its ministers confirming he will cut his ties with the grouping once the general election is called in the coming days.

Minister of State Kevin 'Boxer' Moran said he would run as an unaligned Independent when Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announces the election.

The move will be seen as a blow to efforts by Minister for Transport Shane Ross to keep the group in place during the election campaign.

There was even speculation that the alliance could have agreed some form of joint platform with Fine Gael for that campaign.

Significantly too Finian McGrath is also weighing up his future as he decides whether to run or not.

He is consulting with family and his constituency organisation and it is said to be 50/50 if he will contest the election in the five-seat Dublin Bay North constituency.

In Waterford, John Halligan has not confirmed yet if he will go forward in anticipated election in a few weeks time.
