The Dáil has supported a Private Members' Motion by the Labour Party calling for a nationwide smoky coal ban.

The legislation was opposed by the Government which said that proceeding with the ban would risk illegality unless peat, turf and wet wood were also included.

Many private members' motions, although passed by the Dáil, do not become legislation because the Government does not allow them to proceed.

A smoky coal ban is to be extended to all towns with populations over 10,000 from September of next year.
