Has Irish politics become racist?

For years the Irish politicians thought debate in this country was almost free of racism.

But perhaps politicians here are the same as anywhere else.

The Your Politics podcast hears from Solidarity TD Ruth Coppinger who accused Independent TD Noel Grealish of being racist in the Dáil last week.

The Your Politics Podcast is available here for download on Soundcloud, Stitcher and Apple Podcasts.

Arguments about comments regarding immigration have also spilled over into the by elections.

Fine Gael's candidate in the Wexford contest Verona Murphy has apologises about remarks she made about asylum seekers.

The other candidates in the race are Fianna Fáil’s Malcolm Byrne, Jim Codd of Aontú, Cinnamon Blackmore of Solidarity People Before Profit, Karin Dubsky of the Green Party, Independent Charlie Keddy, George Lawlor of the Labour Party, Melissa O’Neill of the Irish Freedom Party and Johnny Mythen of Sinn Féin.

On the podcast presenter Aine Lawlor was also joined by Political Correspondent Mícheál Lehene and political coverage editor David Murphy.
