A carbon tax increase in the Budget would be reckless and punish the wrong people, Solidarity-PBP TD Bríd Smith has claimed.

The TD said this morning that the Government must commission a report into fuel poverty and the likely impact of a tax change before taking any decision.

Bríd Smith warned that thousands and thousands of people with no alternative to fossil fuels will suffer if there is a carbon tax hike.

She called on the Government to instead increase the tax on the profits of major gas and oil companies.

The TD was joined at this morning's press conference by people representing groups that would be impacted by a carbon tax increase.

Mayo farmer Gerry Loftus said the most vulnerable in society would be burdened with this tax.

Louise Bayliss from SPARK, which represents lone parents, said a carbon tax increase would mean less money for food for many people.
