The Public and Members Bars at Leinster House are to undergo a deep clean and sanitisation following sightings of a rat.

The Dáil members' bar - used exclusively by TDs and Senators - closed temporarily last week after a large rodent was seen there.

It is thought that the ongoing multi-million euro renovation works in Leinster House may have disturbed rodents living below the 18th Century building.

A spokesperson for the Houses of the Oireachtas said the "Facilities Unit had initiated a deep clean and sanitisation of both the Public and Members Bars".

They said both will be closed until after the process was completed.
