Former Fine Gael TD and Senator Gerry Reynolds has withdrawn as a candidate in the next general election in the Sligo/Leitrim constituency.

In a statement to the Leitrim Observer, Mr Reynolds said he had come to the conclusion that it would not be possible to continue to expand and protect his business interests and serve the people of the constituency as a member of the Dáil.

He said that it was with a heavy heart that he advised Fine Gael and the Taoiseach personally of his decision to withdraw his nomination and step away from politics.

In July 2018, Mr Reynolds was selected to contest the election for Fine Gael alongside Sligo-based councillor Sinead Maguire.
