A complaint of alleged fraud has been received in relation to the distribution of postal votes in Sligo, gardaí have confirmed.
Inquiries are being carried out and an investigation is under way.
Sligo County Council has said that a total of 289 postal votes were issued for "physical illness or disability", with 252 of those in the Ballymote/Tubbercurry electoral area.
In relation to the process, the council said it will only grant an application for inclusion on the postal voters list where a valid application is submitted.
This must include the required completed application form, a declaration signed by the applicant together with medical certification/employers certificate or declaration by the applicant made before a Peace Commissioner or Commissioner for Oaths as required.
The council said that over 20 medical practitioners signed the relevant documentation for the applications received.
