Solidarity-People Before Profit TD Richard Boyd Barrett has called for the removal of any application for fossil fuel related infrastructure from legislation which allows fast track planning for key strategic projects.

"If we are serious about the climate emergency that was declared, it is simply unacceptable that fossil fuel companies seeking to profit from the destruction of the environment could develop infrastructure to lock us into further dependency on fossil fuels," Mr Boyd Barrett said.

Mr Boyd-Barrett proposed the Planning and Development (Climate Change) Measures Bill 2019 in the Dáil today.

Changes to planning rules in 2017 allowed developers to bypass existing regulations for specific, strategic projects.

A bill from Mr Boyd-Barrett's colleague Bríd Smith to ban oil and gas drilling in Irish waters received cross party support earlier this year.
