Around 2,000 candidates are expected to contest the local council elections after the deadline for nominations closed today.

Local authorities are now working through the formal list of candidates and the final number will be known on Tuesday.

Candidates have until then to withdraw their nomination papers.

There are 949 seats up for grabs on the 31 councils around the country.

The contest will take place across 166 local electoral areas.

Fianna Fáil is set to run 415 candidates while Fine Gael has selected 405.

Sinn Féin will field 228 candidates, Labour 111, the Green Party 82, Solidarity-PBP 67, Social Democrats 58, Aontú 55,  Renua 27 and the Workers' Party 7.
