The Social Democrats have confirmed that its candidate Ellie Kisyombe will run for the party in the council elections on 24 May.

The party said that it had completed an independent review into the candidacy of Ms Kisyombe.

Originally from Malawi, Ms Kisyombe is running in Dublin's North Inner City electoral area.

She has previously spoken about living in the Direct Provision system here for most of the last ten years.

However, questions were raised about the precise details of her back-story prompting a number of resignations in the Social Democrats and the launching of an internal review.

In a statement today, the party said that following this review "the candidate has undertaken a series of commitments including revising her campaign literature to properly reflect her history and circumstances."

It added that Ms Kisyombe has also corrected the chronology of her back-story to the satisfaction of the National Executive at this time.
